Who We Are — Our History

Word of Hope, a ministry of Lutherans for Life, began in 1991 as a Christ-centered ministry serving women who were surprised by pregnancy and feeling unprepared to parent, along with those struggling with overwhelming guilt after an abortion decision and looking for healing. From the start, its purpose has been to walk beside people carrying emotional and spiritual pain, offering care shaped by Christ’s mercy and forgiveness as they move toward recovery. As the ministry affirmed the value of life at its beginning, it became clear that surprise parenting and abortion were often associated with other life issues, such as anxiety, bereavement, depression, broken relationships, trauma, and suicidal behaviors.

While it is not always possible to know whether these life issues come before, during, or after life-ending decisions, Word of Hope came to see that proclaiming the value of life in every stage and circumstance — and offering real hope — could help prevent both abortion and suicide. In response, the ministry broadened its services to address life issues from fertilization to life everlasting, in keeping with the resource topics available through LFL.

Today, Word of Hope continues to walk alongside individuals on a path toward healing, guided by its commitment to uphold the sanctity of human life, to share the love of Christ in truth and love, and to provide confidential, grace-filled care grounded in scripture.
